Kaitlynn Carter Speaks Out For The First Time Since Miley Cyrus Breakup: ‘I Was In Love With Her’
Kaitlynn Carter penned a deeply personal letter for Elle in her first formal statement since her summer romance with Miley Cyrus. In it, the 31-year-old does not hold back about her feelings both leading up to and since the whirlwind relationship.
“This past July, I went on vacation with a female friend; the next thing I knew, I was in love with her,” Kaitlynn opens the essay. “Until that trip, it had never crossed my mind that I was even capable of loving a woman the way I loved her,” she continues. The relationship sparked a journey of self-discovery for Kaitlynn, one she says she is still traveling.
While she never mentions Miley by name, a number of context clues make it clear Kaitlynn is referencing the singer.
“As my friend and I spent that August traveling through Europe together and trying to move past our respective break-ups,” Kaitlynn writes, seemingly referencing Miley’s split from ex-husband Liam Hemsworth and her own divorce from ex-husband Brody Jenner, “my first and only romance with a woman was born.”
In years past, Miley Cyrus has been open about being queer—while still married to Liam, the singer told Vanity Fair that the couple was “redefining” what it looks like for “someone that’s a queer person like myself to be in a hetero relationship.” But for Kaitlynn, being intimate with a woman was an entirely new experience.
An experience she will always be grateful for.
“While it was short-lived, I’ll remain eternally grateful to my most recent relationship for opening my eyes to this unexplored part of myself, and for inspiring a new level of self-discovery and wonder at all the possibilities of life.”

On top of that, Kaitlynn refuses to let anyone define her sexuality for her, and maintains the relationship was a deep and meaningful one. “This was a profound journey of self-discovery. For the first time, I listened to myself, forgot about the ‘norm’, and lived.”
Miley has since moved on in a very public relationship with 22-year-old Australian singer Cody Simpson. As for Kaitlynn? She’s still trying to figure things out.
“I still don’t feel like I’m in a place to label my sexuality one way or another, but I’m okay with that,” she writes. “It’s been interesting to watch friends and strangers alike assume I’ll automatically revert to being attracted to men, as if they’re more familiar with my sexuality than I am.”
Kaitlynn finishes the essay with some moving advice to her readers.
“Remain curious. Know that there are many layers within you—and they just might be the most invaluable ones.”
