Pop Music Critic Offers Advice For Michael Jackson, Britney & A Lesson For The Public
Pop music critic and Los Angeles Times Staff Writer, Ann Powers, has penned an opinion piece suggesting Michael Jackson could use the foreclosure on his Neverland Ranch as a springboard to reconnect with the public.
In the piece, published today, Powers writes that “Jackson could use this threat from the bank to try to reassert his humanity and reconnect with pop fans.”
, Jackson owes $24 million on his Neverland property, according to a court filing. An auction date on the property has been set for March 19.
Powers suggests, in her editorial, that the recent troubles of stars like Jackson and Britney Spears however, end up blocking out the reason the public fell in love with them in the first place.
“The damage radiating from fallen stars like Britney and Jacko obscures what makes them exceptional — their talent, their beauty, their riches — in order to fulfill tabloid culture’s ultimate mandate that celebrities be just like us,” Powers wrote.
So how do such stars recover from becoming tabloid fodder? While Powers suggests Jackson and Spears “will never be just like us” she does have one idea for how the “Thriller” sensation can get back on track.
“He should take that alleged offer to play 30 nights at London’s O2 Arena. Not only would he garner a rumored $30 million, he’d place attention back on the only part of his life story that remains palatable: his extraordinary musical talent.”
