People’s Choice Awards: Celebrity Sound Bites

LOS ANGELES (January 10, 2007)

JENNIFER ANISTON: Gee, what was Jennifer Aniston really saying when she thanked fans for her People’s Choice award as favorite female star for “The Break-Up?” Her exact words were “thank you for loving ‘The Break-Up.’ I did.” So, was she only talking about the movie? Or, was she referring to her real-life break-up with her co-star, Vince Vaughn? Only Aniston knows for sure. Later in the evening after Vaughn was named favorite leading man, he said “she’s the best” about Aniston.

HALLE BERRY: Since she’s won a People’s Choice Award as favorite action star for playing Storm in “X-Men 3: The Last Stand,” Halle Berry hopes the people will come through in another way. As part of her thank-you speech last night, Berry told the audience if they want to see an “X-Men 4” movie, they should write an executive at 20th Century Fox.

SANDRA OH & ELLEN POMPEO: Looking just fine in a sleeveless black Armani dress at last night’s People’s Choice Awards, it’s hard to imagine Sandra Oh is on Mister Blackwell’s worst-dressed list. When asked to comment on the dubious honor of making the list, Ellen Pompeo quickly answered for Oh, asking rhetorically: “Mister who?” Then, Oh seemed like she wasn’t kidding — but maybe she was — when she said “I’m sorry. I don’t know who that is.” She added she doesn’t pay attention to that.

ELLEN DEGENERES: Ellen DeGeneres is staying out of the Donald Trump/Rosie O’Donnell fray. She says she “has no comment on that.” She says she’s “not diving into that pool” because it’s just not her style.

EVA LONGORIA: Eva Longoria says the one “must have” for awards shows is “a date.” Last night Felicity Huffman was her date to the People’s Choice Awards because Longoria’s fiance was playing a basketball game with the San Antonio Spurs. Longoria says when she picked up her award for favorite female TV star, she forgot to thank Huffman for being there with her. And, Longoria says don’t worry, she and the other “Desperate Housewives” won’t be “going anywhere soon.” She says they’re “contracted for eight years.”

JASON RITTER: On stage Jason Ritter joked he might sing his lines as a presenter. Backstage, he was challenged to sing his thank you for “The Class” winning favorite new TV comedy. Without missing a beat, Ritter made up a tune and sang, “I am so happy we won the People’s Choice. Thank you to the people who voted on their computer systems.” Then, right afterwards, Ritter added, “that melody is copyrighted.”

WANDA SYKES: Don’t be too surprised if Wanda Sykes isn’t asked back to the “People’s Choice Awards.” She was a presenter last night, and suggested there’s not much suspense in who will win. She presented the award for Favorite Movie Leading Lady without ever looking at the name. Sykes said, “Let’s see, who’s here?” Sykes added she’s psychic before announcing Cameron Diaz as the winner.
