Glam Slam: Makeup Mondays — The Marc Jacobs Look
Marc Jacobs earned rave reviews for his Autumn/Winter 2010 collection at New York Fashion Week. The collection, which was described as everything from “beautiful” to “brilliant” and “emotional,” was complimented by hair and makeup that looks a bit undone.
“I wanted the models to have a dirty look, as if the hair and makeup had been slept in,” said Jacobs.
Hey, I think even I could pull off this look myself – since I roll out of bed and into work everyday by 6 AM! NARS Cosmetics created the makeup look for Jacobs, who specifically requested Barbarella lipstick to be used on the models’ lips.
“This look is what you’d see on a girl from the East Village or St-Germain-des-Pres, an existentialist with a modern twist,” said NARS Cosmetics Founder and Creative Director François Nars, whose application technique included using his fingers to achieve the faded effect. “These girls are sexy and cool. Their makeup looks dirty and worn out, as if it has been on all night, but still translates beautifully on the runway.”
“Not only was this look the perfect, modern accompaniment to the classic Marc silhouette, but it is very easily achievable”, according to NARS Lead International Makeup Artist James Boehmer. “This is a look for a girl that is confident, cool and effortlessly sexy – exactly how a lot of women want to look.”
Here’s how:
1. Apply liberal amounts of NARS Hydrating Moisture cream to skin. Apply NARS Sheer Glow foundation with fingers. Skin should look perfect, clean and transparent. The foundation should be the exact color of the skin – not too warm and not too pale.
2. To get the deconstructed “dirty” eye, start with NARS Nuits Blanches Eyeliner Stylo. The liquid should be applied as close to the lash line as possible, on the top lashes only, in a haphazard sort of way. The effect is lived in and imperfect.
3. Layer Black Moon eyeliner pencil along the top lashes, blending it up onto the lid towards the crease. The liner should be smudged down with the finger, so the effect is slightly worn away, but still intense.
4. On top of the liner, apply with your fingers a mixture of D. Gorgeous Single Eyeshadow (new for Spring 2010) along with both sides of Tokyo Duo Eyeshadow. Using your fingers is important because you want to “press” it on. The desired color is neither here nor there – almost as if you don’t know if you’re looking at a lilac, beige, grey, blue or brown. It’s a bit dirty and messed up which is the intention and the reason for not using brushes.
5. This is the most important part of the look: the mascara. Apply multiple coats of NARS Larger Than Life Volumizing Mascara to top and bottom lashes, literally clumping the mascara together. When applying to the base of the lashes, let the mascara wand smudge, creating major definition to the eyes. The eye should not look lined, but rather defined and sexy in a careless, “existentialist” sort of way.
6. Apply a sheer layer of NARS Barbarella Lipstick, blending it downward with the finger. The lip color should be transparent, not thick or opaque. Again, the effect is slightly worn off, but with leaving some pigment behind.
