HBO Pres ‘Open’ To ‘Game Of Thrones’ Prequel; Would Depend On Showrunners, GRRM
“Game of Thrones” likely has three seasons left in the tank, but is there an interest in a prequel series after the battle for the Iron Throne is done?
It’s a question AccessHollywood.com put to HBO Programming President Michael Lombardo during the HBO Executive Session at the Television Critics Association Tour on Thursday, noting the amount of history built into the show, and the popularity of its actors.
“I would be open to anything that Dan [Weiss] and David [Benioff] wanted to do about ‘Game of Thrones’ or almost any subject matter,” Lombardo said. “Really, it would depend fully for us on what they wanted to do. I think you’re right, there’s enormous storytelling to be mined in a prequel, but you’d have to have George [R.R.Martin] and Dan and David decide they want to tackle that and at this point all the focus is on figuring out the next few years with the show, so we haven’t had any conversations about that at this point.”

During the session, Lombardo was also asked by one reporter if “Thrones” would last seven seasons.
“I think seven seasons and out has never been the conversation,” he said. “The question is, how much beyond the seven seasons are we gonna do?

“Obviously we’re shooting 6 now, hopefully discussing 7,” he continued. “I think they’re feeling like there’s probably two more years after 6. As I’ve said before, I’d always love for them to change their minds, but I think that’s what we’re looking at right now.”
