“Frost/Nixon” Readies For Broadway

FROST/NIXON is a new play by Peter Morgan, the award winning author of “The Queen” and “The Last King of Scotland.”

The cast of ten is led by two-time Tony® Award winner Frank Langella as President Richard Nixon and Michael Sheen (“The Queen”) as Sir David Frost, and directed by Michael Grandage. The show begins previews at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre (242 West 45th Street) on March 31. Opening Night is April 22.

In addition to Langella and Sheen, the cast features Remy Auberjonois (John Birt); Shira Gregory (Evonne Goolagong); Corey Johnson (Jack Brennan); Stephen Kunken (Jim Reston); Stephen Rowe (Swifty Lazar/Mike Wallace); Triney Sandoval (Manolo Sanchez); Armand Schultz (Bob Zelnick); Sonya Walger (Caroline Cushing).

“Frost/Nixon” transferred to London?s West End following a sold-out run at the Donmar Warehouse. Prior to coming to Broadway, the production played at the Gielgud Theatre through February 3, 2007.

Revisiting “Frost/Nixon,” critic Nicholas de Jongh said in The Evening Standard: “No other West End production surpasses Peter Morgan’s “Frost/Nixon” for serious-minded excitement and black comedy, or offers a performance to which that misused adjective ?great? applies,? and continued, ?As Nixon, Frank Langella manages an extraordinary acting feat. Michael Sheen’s Frost, already an expert piece of mimicry, has magnificently deepened and darkened. Michael Grandage stages a swift, brilliant production. I was enthralled, amused and enlightened.”

Alastair Macauley in The Financial Times said of “Frost/Nixon”: ?It is a must-see: often comic, full of suspense and juicily interesting. Surely it’s also a must-transfer-to-Broadway? One of its two leading actors, Frank Langella (Richard Nixon), is already a long-term Broadway star. To watch him act beside Britain’s own Michael Sheen is a major theatrical event.?

How was it that a famous British talk-show host, with a playboy reputation, was the one to elicit the apology that the rest of the world was waiting to hear from a former U.S. President?

This fast paced new play, “Frost/Nixon,” takes audiences into the minds of Richard Nixon and David Frost and shows the determination, conviction and lengths that these two men and their closest confidantes went to as they took the stage in one of the most hard fought political interviews in history.

“Frost/Nixon” is Peter Morgan?s first stage play and was developed with Matthew Byam Shaw. He received the Best Screenplay Award at the 2006 Venice Film Festival for The Queen starring Helen Mirren and Michael Sheen. The Queen also earned Morgan Golden Globe, New York Film Critics, Los Angeles Film Critics and British Independent Film Awards and an Oscar nomination for his screenplay. His other current film work includes “The Last King of Scotland,” which earned Morgan a British Independent Film Award nomination. Other films include Martha, Meet Frank, Daniel and Laurence, and the forthcoming The Other Boleyn Girl with Scarlett Johansson. His film Longford is currently playing on HBO.
