Jay-Z On Beyonce: ‘We Pretty Much Like The Same Things’

Jay-Z and Beyonce may keep quiet about their marriage, but in a new Rolling Stone cover story, the mag coaxed the hip-hop mogul into saying a few words about his superstar wife.

“Sometimes on creative stuff, one of us will ask, ‘Do you think this is cool?’” he said, citing her recent collaboration with Lady Gaga, “Telephone,” something he loved – but didn’t urge her to dto. “She’s a magnificent [artists and repetoire person]… So I defer to her on those sort of questions.”

He added that the two artists – who made a rare on-stage appearance together at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival earlier this year – keep their work lives separate.

“We pretty much stay out of each other’s business,” Jay said.

And at home, he admitted, “Overall, we pretty much like the same things,” noting that they’d disagreed on one piece of decor – a painting depicting a gun with a woman’s legs.

The rapper spent his off-stage time at Coachella checking out indie rock acts, and he praised the underground genre to the rock mag.

“I love the energy coming out of indie rock right now,” he said. “It has this rebellion thing that hip-hop is missing now, the thing that made hip-hop hip-hop. A band like Grizzly Bear is actually trying not to make a big, relatable sound – and that ends up attracting people, because everyone loves rebellion.”

He added that seeing that kind of energy might influence his own hits-heavy headlining sets.

“The thing I’m trying to learn now is to pull it back and be a bit more of a selfish performer,” he said. “I’m not necessarily playing everything I want to play. But I want to be able to play a song like ‘Allure’ [from ‘The Black Album’] – I don’t care who knows it! It’s a beautiful song to me.”

Jay’s Rolling Stone issue – featuring the mag’s first ever peel-away cover – is on newsstands now.
