Oprah! The Queen Of Daytime Talks OWN, Duchess Fergie & Takes Aim At ‘Real Housewives’; Plus, Would She Run For Office?
Even Oprah gets a little anxious sometimes!
As the media mogul prepares to end her 25-year run hosting “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in September and embarks on launching the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) this January 1, the small screen legend admits even she gets the jitters.
“First it was, ‘Wowee, omigosh, a network!’” Oprah told Parade magazine in an interview for their December 26 issue, about agreeing to helm OWN for Discovery Networks. “And then it was, ‘What in the world have I done?’ and, ‘Can I really do this?’ So I had a lot of anxiety about it.”
The new network will run 24 hours per day, seven days a week, and will take over what is now the Discovery Health Channel.
Oprah believes the key to the new network’s success lies in the fact that the programming will be “mindful television” – unlike so many of today’s reality shows.
“I think so much of television is a minefield that just zaps your energy, wastes your time,” Oprah told the mag. “…I happened to be on the treadmill one night and passed one of the ‘[Real] Housewives’ shows—I don’t know which city—and literally my mouth was open ‘cause I thought, ‘This is on television?’
“I recognize that there’s a whole group of people who find that very entertaining,” she added. “I wonder for how long. I think that there are people who want to be fed just a little more.”

The Queen of Daytime found a project in another type of royal – Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, who will star in OWN’s “Master Class: Finding Sarah.”
Over the summer, Oprah interviewed Sarah after an embarrassing tape was released that exposed the Duchess attempting to earn money by selling access to Prince Andrew. Oprah says she and Sarah shared “a moment of real connection” – which led to the TV collaboration.
“I remember the last thing I said to [Sarah] when I left that interview: ‘Don’t let me see you on ‘Dancing with the Stars.’’ She started e-mailing me and at one point asked what did I think of her doing a celebrity chef show,” Oprah told the mag. “And I said, ‘That’s not going to help you. How are you going to rehabilitate yourself on a celebrity chef show? You should be working on yourself.’”
The 56-year-old star has been a very vocal supporter of President Obama – but don’t get your hopes up for an “Oprah for President” campaign.
“No,” Oprah told the mag, when asked if she would ever run for office. “Because I know my lane and I can drive very well in it. I don’t want to get in that lane.”
While “Commander-in-Chief Winfrey” may be nixed, “Ambassador Oprah” is a bit more likely.
“When I was at the Kennedy Center Honors for Tina Turner [in 2005], I was sitting at Colin Powell’s table, and he said that we were in the ambassadors room [a room at the State Department with portraits of ambassadors and secretaries of state],” Oprah told the mag. “And I said, ‘Gee, this is really—this is lovely. An ambassador, I think that would be really great.’
“[Colin] goes, ‘Name your country, baby, name your country,’” she laughed. “He goes, ‘No, seriously, do you want to be an ambassador?’ I go: ‘No, really, I was just—it’s just a thought. I was just saying it’s a nice room!’”
