Alec Baldwin: ‘I Don’t Have Any Interest In Acting Any More’

Alec Baldwin may have a host of awards under his belt for his role as Jack Donaghy on NBC’s “30 Rock,” but the actor said he is losing his passion for his craft.

“I don’t have any interest in acting anymore,” Alec told the December 2009 issue of Men’s Journal. “Movies are a part of my past. It’s been 30 years. I’m not young, but I have time to do something else.”

Although the actor has a host of memorable roles under his belt — including those of Jack Ryan in 1990’s “The Hunt For Red October” (opposite Sean Connery), Adam Maitland in 1988’s “Beetle Juice,” and Shelly Caplow in 2003’s “The Cooler” (which earned him a Best Supporting Actor nomination) — he said he doesn’t think much of his film resume.

“It’s a difficult thing to say, but I believe it: I consider my entire movie career a complete failure,” he told the mag. “I’ll tell you why. The goal of movie-making is to star in a film where your performance drives the film, and the film is either a soaring critical or commercial success, and I never had that.”

The actor said he doesn’t even think about his past film work.

“And now, the movies I’ve been in, I never give them a moment’s thought. Every movie I’ve ever been in, I just avoid,” he added.

But he did admit jumping on the cast for “It’s Complicated,” which is out later this month opposite Meryl Streep and his 2010 Oscar co-host Steve Martin, provided a thrill.

“The only reason I did it is because of the chance to work with Meryl,” he said. “Meryl!”

And there is another actor Alec admires as well – Leonardo DiCaprio.

“I just feel like the kind of work I would love to have done would have been more like when Leo did ‘The Aviator.’ I love Leo. I adore him and envy him,” Alec said.

Alec, who has shared the screen with Leo in films including 2004’s “The Aviator” and 2006’s “The Departed,” said the three-time Oscar nominee has it all.

“I remember being there with him and thinking that he has everything. He has youth, he has talent, he has opportunity, he has everything in the business, and I saw him, and I thought, ‘What a great gift to have that convergence of all your abilities and the opportunity to work with Marty Scorsese, and the scripts, and the budgets, and everything,’” Alec said.
