Why We’re Excited About Netflix’s Selena Quintanilla Series

Music icon Selena Quintanilla is coming to Netflix.

On Tuesday, the streaming giant announced their new scripted show, “Selena: The Series,” which will be based on the late singer’s life and career. Selena’s family will develop the story alongside Netflix, as well as executive produce.

“Selena will always have a lasting place in music history and we feel great responsibility to do justice to her memory,” her sister, Suzette Quintanilla, said in a statement, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “With this series, viewers will finally get the full history of Selena, our family, and the impact she has had on all of our lives. We are excited to partner with Campanario and Netflix to give fans a never-before-seen glimpse at our story and highlight why Selena will remain a legend for generations to come.”

Netfliz also released a teaser trailer featuring one of the Mexican-American pop star’s biggest singles, “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom.” The official description calls the series, “A coming of age story following Selena as her dreams come true and all the heart-wrenching and life-changing choices she and her family have to make as they navigate success, family, and music.” No casting information or premiere date has been announced yet.

But this news alone is enough to make any Selena fan rejoice. Here are all the reasons why we’re excited to watch!

1. A never-before-seen glimpse inside Selena’s personal life

The story of Selena’s iconic life and tragic death has already been told on the big screen with Jennifer Lopez playing the titular role in the 1997 film, “Selena.” However, a series would hopefully delve even deeper into the singer’s relationships and private world, especially with those closest to her behind the wheel. Who doesn’t want more insight into this amazing entertainer?

2. The potential for another breakout star

JLo’s role as Selena helped make her a household name when she showcased her singing and dancing abilities on the big screen. Netflix’s upcoming show has the opportunity to strike gold again with the right casting choice. And, we already know the streaming platform can launch big-time acting careers. Ahem, does Noah Centineo ring a bell?

3. New music (hopefully)

Back in 2015, Selena’s family shared one of her previously unreleased songs, “Oh No (I’ll Never Fall In Love Again).” It’s possible the singer may have had even more songs in the vault before her untimely death.
