Kate Winslet Talks Marriage, Turning 40 & Keeping Her Oscar In The Bathroom

After two decades in the spotlight, Kate Winslet is still “uncomfortable” with the term “movie star.”

“I just don’t feel like one, and I don’t live like one either. Not the way I imagine a proper movie star living,” she said in an interview with Wall Street Journal Magazine published on Wednesday.

The British talent is happy to call herself something else, however – 40.

At a recent press junket for her new film “Steve Jobs,” Kate told Access Hollywood’s Tim Vincent that her milestone birthday on Oct. 5 is something she’s ready to embrace.

“After having had three children and turning 40, I never imagined I’d still be able to wear a bikini,” she said. “And feel on top of it all, and also just creatively feeling extremely happy and fulfilled. I think that’s an amazing thing.”

Kate also discussed the landmark with WSJ, saying that living a full life, regardless of ups and downs, has kept her from dwelling in any regret.

“I haven’t wasted a second,” she told the mag. “Good God, have I made the most of those 40 years.”

The mom of three has had plenty to celebrate along the way, including an Oscar win and two Golden Globes, but acknowledged the rough patches as well — particularly her two failed marriages.

Kate was wed to indie filmmaker Jim Threapleton from 1998 to 2001, and to “American Beauty” director Sam Mendes from 2003 to 2010. Despite years on Hollywood’s A-list, the “Titanic” star said fame hasn’t been a factor in her personal life.

“I know lots of people who are not in the public eye who have gone through several marriages, I really do, and it’s just those are the cards that life dealt me. I didn’t plan on it being that way,” she said, adding, “And f*** me, it hasn’t been easy, you know.”

Her professional endeavors may be available to millions across the globe, but Kate said she’s glad to have kept behind-the-scenes struggles to herself.

“No one really knows what has happened in my life,” she said. “No one really knows why my first marriage didn’t last; no one knows why my second didn’t. And I’m proud of those silences.”

Kate married businessman Ned Rocknroll in 2012, and said her third husband is “incredibly supportive” and “everything to all of us,” but hinted that it’s their shared sense of “fun” that’s also helping the relationship work.

When asked where she keeps her coveted Academy Award, Kate revealed the statuette is actually on display in her bathroom. That way, she explained, it’s available to any houseguest looking for a little escape.

“The whole point is for everybody to pick it up and go, ‘I’d like to thank my son and my dad’ – and you can always tell when someone has, because they’re in there a little bit longer after they flushed,” she said. “They’ll come out looking slightly pink-cheeked. It’s hysterical.”

“Steve Jobs” opens nationwide on Oct. 9.
