“The Flash” cast is expanding.
Over the Comic-Con weekend, at the Warner Bros. panel in Hall H, it was revealed that the show is bringing on board “Masters of Sex” actor Teddy Sears to play Jay Garrick in The CW series, and “The Messengers'” Shantel VanSanten as Patty Spivot.
“I’m really excited that Teddy is going to be a part of Team Flash,” Danielle Panabaker (Caitlin Snow) told Access Hollywood, as she reacted to the news on the red carpet at Entertainment Weekly’s SDCC party. “It’s really cool.”
In “The Flash” Season 1 finale, Jay Garrick’s helmet came through the wormhole, and when Carlos Valdes (who plays Cisco Ramon) first read the moment would happen, he knew the character couldn’t be far behind.
“We were sort of expecting it because as soon as I read it in the script, I was like, ‘That’s a Jay Garrick Easter egg. They’re not going to just like put that in there and leave it like that. Geoff [Johns] and Andrew [Kreisberg] and Greg [Berlanti] have always said, ‘If we put an Easter egg in there it’s for a reason,’ and this is a very important reason,” Carlos told Access. “I think he’s going to play a vital role in Season 2.”

Warner Bros. was vague on the character description, only explaining that their version of Jay is, “a mysterious figure who arrives in Central City to warn Barry Allen and his team at S.T.A.R. Labs of an impending danger that he alone cannot hope to stop.” But, it seems likely he’ll play a mentor to Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen.
Patty was described by the studio as, “a police officer and science enthusiast who catches the eye of Barry Allen.”
Asked about Patty potentially having a little something interesting with Barry, Carlos said, “There might be… which, I think is going to be interesting ’cause it’s sort of like a play on a sort of like cop version of Felicity [Smoak from ‘Arrow’], you know what I mean? That’s going to be interesting, I think.”
Candice Patton (Iris West) said she’s excited to have another actress – Shantel — on board.
“She’s from ‘The Messengers’ and The CW family. I think she’ll be a great addition to our show,” Candice said. “I think it’s nice to have more females on the show. It’s just me and Danielle right now, so the more the merrier.”
“The Flash” returns for its second season on Tuesday, October 6 at 8/7c on The CW.
