Oprah Winfrey In Talks To Star On Broadway
With only a handful of episodes of her daytime talk show left, Oprah Winfrey has her sights set on making her Broadway acting debut.
“I have a stack of plays in my bag right now that I am reading,” the daytime TV queen told The Chicago Tribune. “And just this past weekend, I was in New York meeting with producers. We were just talking about what would be the best route to take. But yes, this is really going to happen… life is too short.
“I think that an ensemble production is the way I should go,” she added.
Oprah was previously approached by director Kenny Leon, who helmed the Broadway revival of “Fences.”
“I had always wanted to do ‘Fences,’ Oprah explained. “I went through the idea of trying to take my show to New York, shoot a show during the daytime and appear on Broadway at night. But I couldn’t do it. And finally, Kenny said he couldn’t wait any longer.”
The media queen, who has worked on Broadway as a producer on the musical version of “The Color Purple,” said she’s looking forward to the next chapter in her career.
“I want to wrap this up as it should be wrapped up,” she said of “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” “‘Let’s land this plane,’ I keep saying. And then it’s time to do something for fun… this next phase of my life should be pure delight.”
As of Tuesday, Oprah only has 12 shows left of her daytime talk show.
