Kathy Griffin: ‘I Wouldn’t Have Said The [Zendaya] Joke’
Kathy Griffin has spoken out about the controversies surrounding “Fashion Police.”
Following the airing of the E! series’ post-Oscars episode, co-host Giuliana Rancic faced backlash for comments she made regarding Zendaya Coleman’s dreadlocks. Giuliana has since apologized and Zendaya posted on Instagram that she accepted her apology.
However, Kathy – who joined the show this season – told this Sunday’s Chicago Sun-Times’ Splash magazine that the joke may not have caused such uproar if she had said it instead, although she said she would have avoided it altogether.

“Probably not. But I wouldn’t have said the joke in the first place,” she said.
“Some dude wrote it for her,” Kathy added, confirming the previous report which stated a show writer had penned the joke ahead of time for Giuliana.

Kathy told the magazine that the lesson Giuliana should learn from all of this controversy is to offer her own original fashion insight and commentary, rather than rely on the influence of writers.
“Don’t have anyone write you jokes or even suggest jokes for you on ‘Fashion Police,'” she advised her co-host. “You have enough great insider gossip from actually being ON the red carpet. That’s what fans want to hear the next day. Just talk and be yourself.”
Fellow “Fashion Police” co-host Kelly Osbourne expressed her disapproval of Giuliana’s remarks and ultimately announced she was departing the show a few days later. In her first on-camera interview since her exit, Kelly appeared on mom Sharon Osbourne’s show “The Talk” this week, where she addressed leaving the show.
“It was the five best working years of my life. I am so grateful for the experience,” Kelly said on “The Talk.” “Working with Joan Rivers for five years was incredible… I’m excited for my future now. I want to try new things.”

As for Kathy, she said she’s unsure of the real reason that led to Kelly’s departure from the show.
“Jesus, I don’t know! Sometimes she seemed very upset at the merely seven tapings of ‘Fashion Police’ we did together,” she said. “I can tell you this: I adore that family. I’ve spent the most time with Sharon. She is the real deal. Love her! Kelly came to my house a couple of times when Joan [Rivers] was in the hospital and we were consoling each other. I can tell you there was genuine love there. Oh, and of course, Ozzy is amazing.”
